Hybrid Dreamin’

Posted by admin

I want a Toyota Prius. There, I said it. Sure it has the sex appeal of a burka and is as fast as Shaq but I still want one. Apparently, I am not the only one. Toyota has sold 150,000-180,000 Priuses in 2007, 2008, and 2009 each. Must be the delicious center console display unit.

My second confession – I hate paying for gas which is why I started considering hybrids, both Toyota and Honda versions. With 45 MPG, I could drive from San Diego to San Francisco on one tank of gas. Then I did the math and turns out, this reasoning doesn’t work. And be honest, did you start “going green” around the time gas hit $4 a gallon? I did. Turns out if I were to buy a Civic over the Insight Hybrid or a Corolla over the Prius, it would take me 5 years to make up the price premium in gas money.

Alas, I wish I didn’t do the math. As much as I like to go green, I’d rather save the $6000, recycle some cans, wear an organic hemp tee shirt on my drive up to San Francisco and perhaps part take in a drum circle. GO GREEN!

  1. TeraBap Said,

First of all, ew dude! Second, so by the time you got done writing this blog, you have decided that you do not want a Prius? You start off saying you want one and then end saying that you would rather save the $6,000, so I’m a tad bit confused. Not that confused, just a tad bit.

  2. AC Compressor Said,

    Hippies are bad.

  3. Tapdat Said,

Hmmmmm. Have you considered VW Jetta TDI? I’m not sure what the price of a TDI is so maybe the math doesn’t work out for that one either.

  4. Encoder Motor Said,

just did the math, it would take 6.5 years to make up the price premium paid for a Jetta TDI vs. Jetta. At least with the jetta, u get the awesome torque of the diesel, making it SOMEwhat fun to drive vs. the prius..

  5. Drive Axle Said,

    Good article

  6. masini Said,

    The price ate too hig.

  7. ashu Said,

  8. Window Regulator Said,

45mpg means the car gives 45 Miles per gallon of fuel…

  9. Window Motor Said,

    MPG = miles per gallon

  10. denso parts Said,

  11. ashu Said,

  12. Aupaware Said,

    Oo..my god..very nice design..

  13. TDC Said,

Hmmm…..The base model gasoline civic is rated at 45 MPG hwy…Has more luggage space> (no battery) to take up all the room…I think that makes the Hybrid vs Gas argument for Civics pretty clear….Hybrid (Fail)……:)

  14. fancyAcar Said,

Though there is a significant reduction in the harmful emission, savings on fuel, yet the greatest advantage is found in the operation of the vehicle in low speed and the enhanced efficiency, similar to that of a pure electric vehicle.

  15. edrifter Said,

The hybrids most efficient in the street, not the highway. This is only because they use electricity to accelerate, and all gas on the highway. You should also keep in mind that the EPA tests cars for HWY speeds at 55MPH, I dont know about you, but if I were driving from SD to SF I wouldn’t be driving @55.

Here’s where the catch 22 comes into play, the gear ratio of Hybrids is not geared for HWY driving, they were designed for city roads, not highways. Specifically, when you reach speeds in excess of 55MPH your fuel consumption drastically diminishes, resulting in mush less than anticipated MGP.

Your attitude is right, to truly go green you dont need to spend that extra money. In fact, as you demonstrated ‘Green’ should be properly used as an adverb. (do green things) If you have this mentality, you can be green in any car by changing your driving habits. If you follow three simple steps you can see any cars MPG increase by 50%: Maintain, Accelerate slowly, and Drive slow.
